The Lindos Acropolis

According to Wikipedia, an acropolis is a settlement, especially a citadel, built upon an area of elevated ground—frequently a hill with precipitous sides, chosen for purposes of defense. It comes from the Greek: ἀκρόπολις; from akros or akron, "highest", "topmost", "outermost" and polis, "city."

On Rhodes, there is an acropolis just outside Lindos which is the best preserved on the island, and quite spectacular. Ria and I headed up and were well rewarded for the trek. There are several levels, and many layers of history: ancient Greece, ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire, Medieval Christendom, pre-WWII Italy, and modern Greece have all left their marks, some more elegant and others somewhat destructive.
