Prasonisi

Ria and I visited the very southern tip of Rhodes, where a thin isthmus connects the main island to a small protuberance, and had a wonderful time virtually alone in the heather and on the sands. We looked for, but didn’t find, any tortoises. They are our latest obsession. The inspiration of our tortoise obsession is My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, which I’ve been reading aloud to Ria. It’s marvelous: laugh-out-loud funny, beautifully written, and charmingly innocent. I was reading in my Blue Guide to the Greek Islands that one of the author’s brothers, Larry, who features very humorously in the book, wrote how own wonderful book while living in the tiny house in the Ottoman cemetery in Rodos, and I was delighted by the happy literary connection I was able to make. Now I have to pick up Larry’s book too, once I get back home. (There are apparently no English-language bookstores in Greece. Quel horreur!)

This region is the breeding ground for two species of sea turtles, and is threatened by the intended development of a power plant. Hopefully national and international pressure on the Greek government will halt its construction. To join the opposition, email saveprasonisi@gmail.com. They're also on FB at Save Prasonisi.
