Modern ruins

In one of the mountain villages, across the central square from the church, we wandered through two massive abandoned buildings, one apparently a hotel and the other probably a multi-use building with shops, offices, and apartments. I read a book a few years ago, called The World Without Us, that discussed what the world would look like if humans were magically removed, instantaneously. Seeing the decay reminded me of how quickly our mark on the earth would disappear in some places, but the books made a compelling case for how long our influence would be felt in other places (nuclear power plants, the Gulf coast's petroleum industry).

This is the multi-use building, with apartments upstairs and public spaces downstairs.
