Mountain villages

In the island's interior the mountain villages are mostly off the tourist track — a far cry from the entirely empty coastal resorts — lively and rich, colorful and diverse. Here are some photos of things that struck me as typically Greek (or, maybe, Rhodian — I haven't seen any other part of Greece yet) and worth a second look.

The Orthodox churches are particularly ornate inside, and this one is more decorated outside than many.

A mix of colors and styles on the main street

All the streets have water channels down the center, and the highways have massive rain gutters on each side, clearly indicating that when it rains, massive quantities of water course down the hills. Several low bridges have no sides, but do have a clearly marked ruler so drivers can see quickly just how deep the water covering the bridge is.

Even though I'd have thought that March would be a particularly rainy month, there has been no rain at all since we got here.
